Annual Event a Success
Hugh McNatt Hosts Bird
Supper; Kids’ Chance
Students Receive Benefit
By Cheryl Oliver - Kids Chance of Georgia Executive Director
On February 28, Vidalia lawyer Hugh McNatt, a long-time supporter of Kids’ Chance, Inc., hosted his annual Bird Supper at the Trolley Barn in Atlanta, with help from Attorney Mike Bowers and Balch & Bingham, LLP, an Atlanta law firm.
Several years ago, when Hugh’s good friend Cliff Adams lost his battle with cancer, Hugh decided to give his annual event a new dimension by asking his friends to donate to Kids’ Chance. All contributions were designated for the Kids’ Chance Endowment Fund, a restricted fund established by the Board of Directors in 1994, designed to grow to $1,000,000, after which earnings can be used to operate the scholarship program.
Complying with Endowment Fund stipulations, when receipts from Hugh’s friends reached $100,000, the L. Clifford Adams Memorial Scholarship Fund came into being. This year, total receipts exceeded $200,000 and the E. Earl Mallard Memorial Scholarship Fund was established. The two accounts fund one annual scholarship each to a Kids’ Chance recipient.
The 2007 recipient of the Cliff Adams Memorial Scholarship is Christina Scholte, a nursing student at Auburn University. Christina’s mother, Julie Brandau, was slain in the 2005 Fulton County Courthouse tragedy.
Recipient of the 2007 Earl Mallard Memorial Scholarship is Tony Uriegas, a sophomore at Georgia State University majoring in marketing and industrial design.
Tony’s mother, Betty Uriegas, is a quadriplegic as a result of injuries she received in 1994 while on duty as a Gainesville police officer. Tony’s older sister, Betsy, is a former Kids’ Chance recipient. She graduates this Spring from the Medical College of Georgia and will do a residency in neurological surgery at Duke Medical Center.
There is no adequate way to convey our gratitude to Hugh McNatt and his wife, Lynn, for their support of Kids’ Chance. It simply defies expression. Someone has said, “The enduring legacy of any people is how they helped with human hurts and hopes.” Hugh and Lynn are building a legacy through their support of Kids’ Chance. We are profoundly grateful for their benevolence and hope they somehow grasp what an impact their efforts have on the lives of the families we serve.
We are indeed thankful for all of the supporters and volunteers who have realized the value of the good work our program accomplishes. Thanks especially to Ray Brasted for donating space in Georgia1st.com to publicize our life-changing program!
Note: The Endowment Fund now has a balance in excess of $820,000. We’re getting close to our goal! We owe a debt of gratitude to Lendon Gibbs, who has served on the Kids’ Chance Board of Directors for many years, for his expert guidance in making sound investments to ensure steady growth of the Endowment Fund.
