After years in Valdosta, the Kids' Chance program in Georgia is planning to move to Atlanta.
Director's Position to be Restructured
Kids Chance/Georgia Plans to
Move Office to Atlanta
Kids Chance, Inc. of Georgia has grown continuously since its inception nineteen years ago with the sole mission of annually providing scholarship funds to students whose parents have been catastrophically or fatally injured while working for a Georgia employer.
In 2006, 77 young people benefited from Kids’ Chance scholarships with awards amounting to more than $209,000. Over the years, Founder and Chairman of the Board Bob Clyatt has overseen operations from the Kids’ Chance office in Valdosta, Georgia, where Cheryl Oliver, Executive Director, directs the administration of the scholarship awards and the day-to-day operations of the organization.
Cheryl travels frequently attending fundraising and public awareness events in addition to her administrative responsibilities. The increasing demands for greater funding as well as the increased workload for the Executive Director has led the Board of Directors to consider changes to the “way we have always done things,” said Polly Hale, President of Kids’ Chance of Georgia.
At their March 2007 Board Meeting, the Directors decided that operations should be more centrally located and within the year the main office of Kids’ Chance should be relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. This relocation will facilitate the ability of the Board to hold meetings and allow for a restructuring of the Executive Director’s role by separating functions into two positions. One position will be focused on interacting with the scholars and the other will be focused on the business operations, including fundraising and general administration.
Another initiative set by the Board is to restructure fundraising activity to better coordinate event schedules and sponsorships. The Board is looking to offer sponsors an opportunity to select a level of support that will allow them to make an annual contribution with public recognition at multiple events across the course of the year. This will help to eliminate repeated requests for individual event sponsorships that can erode sponsor support overall.
The Board is enthusiastic about the opportunities for expanding the ability to help the scholarship recipients and enhance sponsor relations. The success of these initiatives will depend on the continued support and hard work of the network of volunteers who tirelessly give of their time and energy to help “Our Kids” through fundraising and public awareness campaigns.
