Board Member Honored
Lendon Gibbs, who served on the Georgia Kids' Chance Board of Directors from 1990 to 2007 was recognized for his tireless efforts over the years on behalf of the children of workers injured or killed on the job.
He was honored at the annual Georgia Self Insurance Association Spring Conference held in Savannah, May 9-11.
The conference drew several hundreds attendees and service providers. Also recognized at the GSIA conference was Kids' Chance scholarship recipient, Youlonda Patterson.
Youlonda Patterson has a clear focus on her career goals and is well on her way to achieving them as a student at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah. She majors in Radiologic Science; after graduating in May 2008, she will sit for the National Boards for Radiology and Mammography to become certified in those fields. She says she wants to work as a mammographer to help with the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. “After two years of full time work, I plan to get my Master’s degree and become a Radiologist’s Assistant.”
YOULONDA PATTERSON PROFILE
Youlonda and her brothers, Oscar and Kevin, became Kids’ Chance recipients in 2006. Oscar will soon graduate from Valdosta State University with a degree in exercise science. Kevin, who plays football for Wake Forest University, plans to major in sociology. Their father, Michael Patterson, received severe injuries in 2002 while working as a chip system operator for a paper company in St. Mary’s, Ga.
In a recent note, Youlonda wrote, “Kids’ Chance has helped me and my brothers in more ways than I could ever express. The assistance I receive from Kids’ Chance is helping me to reach my goals by giving me the extra financial support to pay for housing and student fees as well as tuition and books. Without your support, my dreams would not be coming true. Thank you for all of your support on behalf of the Patterson family and all Kids’ Chance recipients.”
All Kids’ Chance supporters can take pride in the fact that they are propelling Youlonda and our other recipients toward their educational dreams and career goals. We have no doubt that this outstanding young woman will make us proud of her achievements as she reaches for the stars.
