Kids' Chance Georgia Director Resigns Position

Cheryl Oliver, like Kids' Chance, had as her focus the scholarship recipients.

SO LONG … BUT NEVER GOODBYE!

Cheryl Oliver
How exciting it is that Kids’ Chance has outgrown its quarters! When my tenure with Kids’ Chance began back in 1999, under the mentorship of Phyllis Daniel, we had 38 students on scholarship; we’ve seen that number rise to more than 75.

I have marveled over the past 8 ½ years as people have demonstrated over and over their devotion to this phenomenal, life-changing program. Volunteers, Board members, donors, students and their families, all have made the name Kids’ Chance synonymous with caring throughout the state and beyond Georgia’s borders.

A line from Annie sums up how I feel about resigning as Executive Director: “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

That’s why I refuse to say “Goodbye” – I’ll be around, joining the ranks of volunteers who keep this program strong and viable.

Separation anxiety? Sure, I feel it. But it’s coupled with a sense of excitement as I hand off the baton to Forrest Hale and Candence Hester, who will guide the transition of the office to the Atlanta area. I’m confident in our future growth and excited to see how this agency will change and progress.

I feel assured that the people who serve on the Board of Directors will never lose their compassion for the families we help. I’m determined to keep alive the deep friendships I’ve formed with the many volunteers. Arthur Christopher Benson said, “Readjusting is a painful process, but most of us need it at one time or another.”

This is a time of readjustment, of change, and we all share the responsibility of making it work.

Those of you who know me well know I could go on and on about how I feel about Kids’ Chance and the people affiliated with it. But I won’t. I’ll simply say, “So Long” or as Tom Petty put in a song:

“You and I will meet again
when we’re least expecting it.
One day in some far off place
I will recognize your face.
I won’t say goodbye my friend
for you and I will meet again.”
